Taekidokai (TKMA): A Professionally Run Martial Arts School with a Unique Heritage
Taekidokai, also known as TKMA (Taekidokai Martial Arts), is a professionally operated martial arts school founded by Sensei Rodney Day, a 7th Dan black belt with over 45 years of experience across Budokan Karate, Goshinryu, Hapshinryu, Taekwondo, and Aikido. Drawing from this rich and diverse martial background, Sensei Day developed the art of Taekido—a dynamic and integrated system that he continues to teach across Australia and New Zealand. His instruction has shaped a generation of Chief Instructors, Instructors, and students, establishing a unified and effective method of training unlike any other.
Taekido encourages discipline, confidence, respect, and self-defence. It is a comprehensive martial art that nurtures the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of each practitioner, making it suitable for men, women, and children of all ages.
TKMA is renowned for its dramatic flying and spinning kicks, as well as its practical holds, throws, and locks. The name “Taekidokai” is derived from Japanese and means “The Way of Body and Spirit,” reflecting its roots in Eastern philosophy and the culmination of decades of martial arts development.
More than a system of tactics or self-defence, Taekidokai is a disciplined path for cultivating the spirit. Training is simple, effective, and transformative—enhancing self-awareness, building resilience, and promoting inner calm. Students learn to move with grace and power, to resolve conflict peacefully, and to develop strength of character through dedicated and mindful practice.
This philosophy of “moving Zen” fosters lasting well-being and clarity, with benefits that deepen through consistent training and commitment.
